How do you turn photos into a video with a story?

Kirill Yablonskiy · Founder & Principal Engineer ·

Quick answer

Turn photos into a story by choosing a change you can show: a starting point, an action and a result. Pick 5 images that each add information, then write narration connecting them. For a 30-second draft, that gives an average of 6 seconds per image, adjusted to the detail viewers need to inspect.

How is a photo story different from animating a photo?

A photo story uses several images to explain an event or change. Animating one image adds motion but does not necessarily add context. Begin with the relationship between pictures. A close-up of a finished object matters more when viewers have seen the problem it solves. Keep the order truthful: do not imply a before-and-after result if the images document different situations.

Which photos should you choose?

Choose an establishing image, the starting condition, a useful detail, the action or intermediate stage, and the outcome. Remove near duplicates unless the comparison is the point. Check vertical cropping before writing about details near the edge. Leave space for captions, and avoid enlarging a small photo until its important details become unreadable.

  1. Write the change in a single sentence.
  2. Select one image for each story beat.
  3. Check dates, context and permission.
  4. Write a connecting narration rather than labels.
  5. Preview at phone size before exporting.

How much movement should you add?

Use movement only when it helps the viewer notice something. A slow crop can reveal a detail; a rapid zoom can make a still image difficult to inspect. Time the narration before adding transitions. YouTube’s upload guide recommends trying a test Short; use that trial to inspect how the actual phone presentation affects your images and captions.

A repaired ceramic cup in five images

Illustrative planning exercise · not measured product performance

Illustrative storyboard: use a whole-object photo, a close-up of the crack, the preparation, the repair and the finished cup. Five images at 6 seconds each give a 30-second draft. In Studio, supply your photos and a script that explains the change. This is a planning example, not a generated video or a customer case study.

Frequently asked questions

Do the photos need to move?

No. Clear sequencing and narration can make still images useful without synthetic animation.

Can I mix photos with video?

Yes. Use a clip where motion explains something a still image cannot.

Should every image last the same time?

No. Equal timing is a planning shortcut; give complex details more time.

Make your footage do the explaining.
